FOOTBALL: Worthing host 'positive' meeting

WORTHING Football Club held a meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss ways to move the club forward.

Rebels president Morty Hollis was pleased with how it went and said: "It was the first meeting of a possible new set-up and we've all now gone away to think about things.

"It was a positive meeting and there was an excellent turn-out of quite influential people from around the town.

"I'm sure more news will follow."

Worthing assistant manager Simon McMenemy will have been interested in how the meeting panned out as he believes the club needs to create a solid base to be able to move forward '“ both on and off the pitch.

With boss Simon Colbran, McMenemy guided Rebels to a third-place finish in Ryman League Division 1 South, only to lose in the play-off semi-finals to Godalming, who were beaten 2-1 at Folkestone in the final on Saturday.

McMenemy said: "There needs to be a solid platform next season to build from.

"When things keep changing, it makes it difficult to build anything of any worth.

"We need to be a unit pushing forward together.

"At the moment, it's very difficult for myself and Simon, or anyone else, to make a sustained go of things in whatever league we are in.

"A playing budget '“ and what we'll need for promotion next season '“ is the next step on from creating a solid base.

"There were too many obstacles last season, which came from not having the base.

"It's a great club and the fans are unbelievable and deserve better '“ it's as simple as that.

"There's just a few people who do everything here, which isn't the way a football club should be run.

"People are doing work they have no expertise in '“ fair play to them for doing it, but they need more help.

"They're the glue of the club who hold it together but there's too many people sitting on the sidelines not doing enough. The club needs more support and until things change, it's very difficult to move forward."

McMenemy added: "We've got a great young team here and two managers, who genuinely enjoy being at the club, who are trying to take the club back up to where they used to be.

"And it would be very difficult to walk away from. The fans are so amazing and we always want to do our best for them '“ on the pitch, talking to the press, talking to the fans after games, everything.

"The fan base here is tremendous and, with the World Cup coming up, which will create a football buzz, there could be larger attendances next season.

"There's also a fantastic young group of players, who love playing for the club.

"We want to stay but will just have to wait and see what happens now."
