FOOTBALL: Worthing lose at Ashford

WORTHING'S title dream looks to have been ended by Ashford Town as the Rebels went down 2-0 on Saturday (April 4).

The Rebels play-off hopes were also dented as they dropped to fifth in Rymans Division 1 South, after Cray Wanderers, Kingstonian, Fleet Town all won and Met Police drew.

Rebels had the majority of the second half with Mickey Demetriou, Lee Farrell, Scott Kirkwood and Paul Kennett all going close but the damage was done by half time when Worthing trailed 2-0.

Ashford took the lead on 15 minutes when Daniel Braithwaite's cross bounced over Alan Mansfield and Paul Jones had the simple task of tapping home into an empty net.

This began a 15 minute dominant spell from Ashford and they then doubled their lead on the half hour mark, when Tony Browne nodded home at the back post from another Braithwaite cross.

Despite their efforts after the break the Rebels couldn't find the net, leaving themselves in a low position in the play-off race.

WORTHING: Mansfield; Benn, Axten, Alexander, O'Flaherty; Lopes, Kennett, Akehurst, Demetriou; Treleaven, Brotherton. Subs: Farrell (Treleaven 56) Kirkwood (Akehurst 70), Jenkins (Lopes 81). Attd: 261
