Ash Bailey’s side were outclassed but far from embarrassed by current holders and FA Cup heroes Hawks.

In the end the visitors just had too much firepower and the three-division gap began to show.

Despite the defeat, Bailey was happy with his side’s showing and said: “I am proud of everyone after that performance.

“It was an excellent team performance against an outstanding side but we held our own and more than gave them a challenge.

“Their manager was great afterwards – he’s a nice guy and was massively complimentary over how we kept trying to play.

“We were not fazed by them even though we knew it was going to be tough and to score a brilliant goal was the icing on the cake.”

There had been little sign of a breakthrough but a moment of quality from former Crawley man Scott Neilson broke the deadlock when he produced a good finish from the edge of the area on the half hour.

It was 2-0 three minutes before the break as Jake Robinson rounded Callum Fidler before slotting home.

Hawks ended the home side’s hopes of a cup shock as they added a third on 63 minutes.

That man Robinson notched his second after turning his marker and smashing a superb strike into the net.

Lancing then fell four goals behind with 20 minutes still to play with Dave Sharman putting through his own net following pressure from Sam Deering.

The home side did manage to snatch a consolation, which was well deserved.

It was the stand-out goal of the the game, too, as David O’Callaghan crashed home a shot from 25 yards.
