Barcelona interest in Worthing keeper a surprise to boss Hinshelwood

Adam Hinshelwood admitted Barcelona’s rumoured interest in goalkeeper Carl Rushworth was a ‘massive surprise’ after reports emerged that the Spanish super-club had twice sent scouts to watch the highly-rated stopper in the Isthmian Premier Division this season.

On-loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, the 18-year-old has earned rave reviews this season and a super save against Folkestone Invicta saw him go viral on social media last weekend.

Rushworth joined the Premier League club from FC Halifax Town a year ago and has since been called up to the England under-19s squad for their Euro qualifiers last November.

The La Liga giants are reported to be plotting a £4 million bid for the young keeper, rumours which Worthing boss Hinshelwood admits took him ‘massively’ by surprise.

He said: “I know he’s played well but it’s a long way from where we are. Brighton will be delighted with how he’s performed and I’m sure the coaches at Brighton won’t let him get distracted by anything going on off the pitch.

“It’s important now that he maintains his level on the pitch. His consistency has been excellent the last ten games and that’s rare for such a young goalkeeper.

“So I’m sure the coaches at Brighton will be keen for him to maintain it for the last 12 league games of the season.”
