Mavericks were 2-1 down when Golds were awarded a spot-kick on 71 minutes after defender Grant Philpott tangled with George Gaskin.

Mitchell Hand scored the penalty and the hosts then added two more, the fourth again from the spot after Philpott was sent off for a foul.

Geary said: “It was a disgusting decision for their first penalty as it was never a foul. It’s affected the whole game as, at that time, it could have gone either way. It’s just so frustrating and we’ve now had three red cards in the last five or six games, when we’d previously had one all season.”

Goals from Rob Hutchings and Gaskin gave Golds a 2-0 half-time lead.

Paul Elliott’s near post volley made it 2-1 early in the second half, before the disputed spot-kick gave Golds a 3-1 lead.

Hand netted another penalty for Littlehampton’s fourth, before Gaskin completed the scoring late on.
