Duffy, 28, has slipped down the pecking order at Brighton and made just 14 starts for Graham Potter's men last season.

West Ham, Burnley and West Brom are also said to be keen but Duffy is a boyhood Celtic fan and the Scottish champions are in pole position to sign the defender who has three years remaining on his contract.

“I think that would be a really good piece of business if Celtic can get that over the line,” said Chris Sutton, speaking on BT Sport’s Scottish Football Extra alongside Rangers legend Ally McCoist.

“At first when the rumours came out, I thought that can’t be possible.

“But the longer this goes, I’m hearing there may be a possibility of him coming in.

“And if he does come in I think Ally (McCoist) will be worried for his team (Rangers).”

Hoops boss Neil Lennon is keen to bolster his central defence and admits he is keen on the no nonsense Brighton defender.

"I think there's common knowledge that there has been interest that's been expressed," Lennon said.

Duffy's chances of first team action at Brighton have been limited further with Ben White returning from a successful loan spell at Leeds and the arrival of Dutch international Joel Veltman from Ajax.

Yesterday Albion skipper and centre back Lewis Dunk agreed a new five-year contract, ending speculation of a £40m move to Chelsea.
