Galloway, who is an A&E doctor at the Royal Sussex, tweeted this morning, “A plea to patients. Please come to A&E if you need us. Still call for help when you have symptoms like chest pain. We are set up to treat Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 patients in dedicated areas.”

The hospital currently has separate areas to lessen the risk of infection to those without the Covid-19 virus, and for urgent cases Galloway says patients should attend A&E.

In a brief phone call to Brighton, Galloway asked the club to thank the community on his behalf, for complying with the social distancing and lockdown measures which he confirmed had been extremely beneficial to him and his team.

He said, “The lockdown, social distancing and following other advice on hand hygiene has really helped slow the spread of the virus. These measures are really, really helping us and while we still have a way to go, people are helping us save lives and flatten the curve.

“With everyone working together in this way it has given hospitals everywhere vital time to prepare and cope and it will help us even more in the weeks ahead. It is essential people continue to follow the government and NHS advice, as it will enable us to save more lives in the long term.”

Galloway also thanked the club and their catering partners for deliveries of food and drink, which are being made available to staff during breaks they are able to take during or between shifts.

Staff from Sodexo, the club, Albion in the Community and the club’s IT partner Focus Group packaged up and delivered it to the hospital.

The food and drinks were on site and would have been used in the various kiosks throughout the stadium for the postponed matches against Arsenal and Manchester United.

He said that and the promise of match tickets in the future has helped to boost morale among his team, but he also reiterated the single most important thing can do to help is follow the government and NHS advice, as outlined below.

Everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus. You should only leave the house for 1 of 4 reasons:

One form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household

Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person

Travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home
