Brighton consider future of former Arsenal and Manchester United striker

Welbeck joined on a free transfer in the summer on a one-year deal after he suffered relegation with his previous club Watford.

The 30-year-old former Manchester United and Arsenal man has scored once for Brighton so far this season but has also provided a much-needed focal point to their attack.

Welbeck offers a physical presence but his pace and link up play has worked well alongside the likes of Neal Maupay and Aaron Connolly.

"Danny would say there is more to come," said Potter ahead of Brighton's trip to Leicester. "I think that’s normal when you consider what he has been through from the back end of last season to this season with the non-existent, if you like, pre-season phase he had.

"He is just trying to get up to speed and play in the Premier League. I think he has done it really well but I’m sure he can get better the longer he is playing with us, the more training he has, the more game time he has.

"I think everybody would say that is generally what happens. But we are delighted with him of course".

Welbeck has had injury issues in the past but if he can maintain his current level, Brighton could well be tempted to offer the former England international an extended deal.

"I think that is between Danny and the club," Potter said. "I think the most important thing for me is to help him enjoy his football.

"He came from Watford, he wasn’t involved there, they got relegated. There’s a bit of a label around injuries and stuff like that.

"The most important thing is to help him get on the pitch, help him enjoy his football, help him score his goals.

"And then we see later down the line."

Potter also gave words of encouragement to Welbeck's striker partner Maupay. The Frenchman has four goals to his name this season but has had disciplinary and niggling injury issues.

He has also been taken off penalties after his miss against Liverpool and replaced by Pascal Gross.

"He is a thoughtful character," said Potter. "He is also an honest character. He knows he's had some moments he can reflect on and learn from.

"That's good, because that's how you develop and grow and improve. If there's one thing I know about Neal, he wants to do that.

"He wants to help the team and our job is to help him channel that desire, that emotion, to help him perform his best.

"But he's been really good. He's reflected on what's happened and tried to make positive steps going forward. That's ultimately all you can ask from a person."
