Brighton star midfielder ruled out for Burnley after agonising injury at Liverpool

Brighton's memorable Premier League victory at Liverpool last night came at high price for Albion midfielder Solly March.

March, 26, has been excellent this season and once again performed well at Anfield in the unfamiliar position of right wing back.

March was threat to the Liverpool defence and it was his deep cross that picked out Dan Burn who nodded back into the box for Steven Alzate to fire home the second half winner.

Just 10 minutes later however, March was practically carried off the pitch by the Albion physios and looked in serious pain with a suspected back of the knee/hamstring problem.

He could barely place any weight at all on his left leg and the midfielder, who has three goals from 23 appearances this season, has already been ruled out for Saturday's trip to Burnley.

“It doesn’t look so good," said head coach Graham Potter after the match. "That is the down bit of the night."

“It is so tough for the guys. They are playing every couple of days at such intensity.

“We will have to see how he settles down but obviously no chance for the weekend."

Potter played March on the right so he could cut inside and test Liverpool defender Andy Robertson on his weaker foot.

Potter admitted it was a gamble but said he was pleased with his formation and tactics, which also allowed Burn to play left wing and use his height at the far post.

"Solly likes playing there (on the right)," said Potter. "It could test Robertson on his inside and also combine with Pascal (Gross). That was the thinking.

"If we had been beaten, I would have been criticised I'm sure but tonight is my night, I guess."

Potter also highlighted the contribution of the opposite wing back Burn. The 6ft 7in defender received heavy criticism from sections of the support after the 3-3 draw against Wolves.

But Burn has been a consistent performer on the left and was one of many to shine at Anfield.

"Anybody that criticises somebody like Dan Burn, does not understand football," said Potter. "I would not listen to that, it is just irrelevant. Dan gives his best everyday, he plays at the highest level and is a fantastic example of what an athlete should be.

"It is not going to go well every day but he recovers and he fights for the team."

The win was Brighton's first at Anfield in 39 years and it's also the first time Albion have recorded four consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League.

“It's something to be proud of," said skipper Lewis Dunk. "I have been in defence a long time, so I can't have been doing too well before!

"It's a nice one and we now want to get another clean sheet in the next game.

“We've shown what we're about. Even when we weren't winning games, we stayed in them and we showed the spirit we had when we came from 3-1 down against Wolves last month.

“We know we've got in us. It's nice that we have picked up a couple of wins lately, we've been performing for a good amount of time and it's nice to have those ten points [from the last four games] to back it up.

“We have to carry on though. We haven't been getting carried away because we know what it's like to go on a bad run. We need to continue to focus.”
