Head coach Graham Potter is a huge admirer of the Scotland international and Albion's passing style could get the best from Gilmour after a disappointing loan at relegated Norwich last term.

Gilmour is said to have passed a medical and fans are now just waiting for the club to confirm the deal.

The deal almost collapsed earlier in the day due to injuries to Chelsea’s midfield – but talks progressed and the Stamford Bridge officials eventually rubber stamped the signing.

It could represent good business for Albion who have landed a player yet to fulfil his full potential and was rated as one of the best young midfielders in the Premier League just two years ago.

Meanwhile, Brighton forward Zak Emmerson has been linked with a transfer deadline day move to Blackpool.

The Seasiders are looking to “rush through a deal” for the 18-year-old ahead of deadline – but it is unknown whether it will be a permanent or loan move.

The former Manchester United academy product scored 20 goals in 26 appearances for Brighton’s Under-18 side last season.

Defender Ed Turns could also be seeking a loan as he searches for the regular first team football. Jan Paul van Hecke now appears to staying at the club having previously been linked with a loan move to Fulham.

One player who did leave today was Albion’s Romanian striker Florin Andone after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

Head coach Graham Potter said, “Florin’s been a good professional, and following some tough injuries, he’s worked really hard to get back to his best.

“Now he wants to play regularly, but we can’t give him that opportunity. With this in mind we’ve reached an agreement that suits all parties."
