Sanchez, who was on loan at Rochdale last season, was a surprise inclusion as he replaced regular No 1 Maty Ryan for the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The 6ft 6in Spanish stopper was calm and composed on his debut but could not prevent Albion from slipping to their fourth defeat of the campaign.

Harry Kane scored the first from the penalty before Tariq Lamptey netted a deserved leveller for Albion.

Brighton looked to be heading for a point until second half sub Gareth Bale scored the winner with a well placed header.

Ryan, who was dropped for 'tactical reasons,' played every league game for the Seagulls last season and started the first six of this term.

Head coach Graham Potter said Ryan 'needed a breather' and had no hesitation in playing Sanchez who joined Brighton from Levante in 2013.

"We were unlucky today but it is football isn't," said Sanchez. "It's always positive in good games and bad games you can always get a positive and go to the next one and try to get stronger and today is an example of that.

"We have to go again on Friday (Burnley) and try to get better and get the three points."

Sanchez insisted he wasn't nervous before the match and also produced an excellent stop to prevent an own goal from Joel Veltman in the second half.

"It's been what I have been working my whole life for," said the 23-year-old. "But I got my chance and tried to do my best and hopefully keep going like that.

"You always need to expect the unexpected. So as a goalkeeper I have to be aware of everything.

"I was training hard. I knew 100 per cent Saturday that I was playing. So I could prepare for the game and sleep well and stuff. I don't get the nerves.

"Good nerves, I do get. All I can do is try to do my best here, training and everything.

"It is disappointing. I felt we could have got some more from this game. The penalty they were given, we are not happy with and the penalty that should have been given to us we are not happy with.

"We are not happy with a couple of the divisions but this is football. Anything can happen but we feel we should have got more from this.

"We have along week now of training. Everyone will train hard and recovery and go again. We get our head into the game and do the best we can."
