Graham Potter accidentally reveals Moises Caicedo transfer latest in press conference slip

Brighton and Hove Albion head coach Graham Potter perhaps revealed more than he expected

Caicedo, 19, is one of South America's most promising young talents and has been heavily linked with a move to Premier League giants Manchester United and also West Ham.

Brighton however appear to have negotiated themselves into pole-position and are said to be extremely close to concluding a £4.5m with his current club Independiente del Valle.

Potter is rarely one to speculate and often tends to swot away or straight bat any speculation during his press conferences, especially during transfer windows.

The Albion boss however perhaps let slip more than he intended during an exchange with a reporter at today's press conference.

Here's the full exchange:

Reporter: I have asked you before about Caicedo. It does not go away and I read reports that Brighton are getting closer. Is he a player you are looking to bring in, anything you can update us on?

Potter: "There’s always speculation. A bit of noise around things, but until he is a Brighton player, I can’t really elaborate on anything.

Reporter: "When you say 'until' he's a Brighton player, that sort of indicates he's abut to become a Brighton player?

Potter then quickly retracted: "Well, until anybody's a Brighton player should I say. Please excuse my language. Until anybody is a Brighton player because they are not our players.

Reporter: "Is it possible he could become a Brighton player?"

Potter: "Anything is possible, you never know !"

Caicedo joined Independiente at the age of 13, progressed through their youth ranks and reached the first team in 2019, where he has four goals from 25 appearances.

His impressive displays saw him called up to Ecuador national team in October 2020 and made his debut in a World Cup qualifier 1-0 against Argentina.

He scored the first goal for his country in a 4-2 home win over Uruguay and became the first player born in the 21st century to net in a World Cup qualifier.

Albion have maintained a good relationship with Independiente after signing Billy Arce in 2018. It is believed his work permit is secured and Caicedo will be travelling tomorrow to sign subject to medical

"We have received an offer from a European club for Moises Caicedo," said Independiente manager, Santiago Morales.

"We are negotiating the proposal. It is most likely that he will not be in our team in 2021. Due to the proposal we've received, it is very difficult to keep him."

Albion will sincerely hope any future deal will work out better than Arce's signing in 2018.

Arce agreed a four-year contract with Brighton in August 2018 after he joined for a reported £860,000 from Independiente Del Valle of Ecquardor, where he scored 18 goals in 52 appearances.

He has never played for Brighton and has had loan spells at Extremadura in the Spanish second division, Ecuadorian outfits Emelec and then Barcelona SC.

Arce was then arrested in his home country of Ecuador in October 2019 as the then 21-year-old was caught drink driving, and taken to prison for 20 days, plus 50 hours community service.
