Graham Potter addresses Danny Welbeck new contract talk after superb Leeds victory

Former England forward Welbeck rifled home 11 minutes from time at the Amex Stadium after executing a perfect Cruyff turn on a dropping ball to secure a precious three points for the Seagulls.

Pascal Gross put Albion on course for only a third top-flight home success of the season by converting an early penalty after Ezgjan Alioski hauled down Welbeck in the box.

Albion’s victory pulled them 10 points clear of the drop and piled further pressure on 18th-placed Fulham in the scrap for safety. The win would have been far more comfortable had Leandro Trossard and Neal Maupay not spurned golden chances.

Welbeck, who joined on a free transfer last summer, has five goals this season and is out of contract this June.

"The intention is there but the most important thing at this stage is that we will finish the season off as strongly as we can and that's Danny as a professional.

"He is a top guy and he wants to finish the season off well and he wants to complete the job that he started and then we will sit down with all the guys and talk abut the future.

"Danny has that quality. He has scored some good goals for us. He has contributed to what we have done on the pitch. He is a Premier League player and he has fantastic attributes as a player and a person.

"But now it is just about getting the points that we need."

It was a superb display from Potter's team and a perfect response to the 1-0 loss at Sheffield United last week.

"A big victory and a big performance," added the Albion head coach. "One with a lot of quality and a lot of character. Disappointed with the last one and you have to respond and the players did. Overall a fully deserved three points.

"We deserved the two-goal lead. Sometimes you don't get what you deserve.

"It was one of our best performances. You have to match Leeds for their effort and honesty and I felt we did that really well.

"There are still a lot of points to play for and we want to get more points as well."

Mid-table Leeds, who were without influential midfielder Kalvin Phillips, had plenty of possession on the south coast but fell well below their dynamic best and created little.

Leeds were back in Sussex for the first time since suffering an embarrassing FA Cup third-round exit up the A23 at League Two Crawley in January.

Brighton won 1-0 at Elland Road six days after that match and played with the intensity of a team eager to ease relegation fears by recording a league double.

Albion’s welcome three points was a first in five games and prolonged Leeds’ 12-year wait for success in Brighton.

Welbeck said: "Every single game is important in the Premier league, we still have a few left and anything can happen.

"We have put ourselves in a good position. With the squad we have and the club we are we want to be fighting higher.

"We want to finish the season strongly."

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa, added, "We didn't play well. The victory for the opponent was fair. We created very little danger and it was difficult for us to recover the ball."

On missing Kalvin Phillips: "His absence wasn't the factor of why we lost.

"The game was hard with the height of their centre-backs. We couldn't avoid them initiating the play nor could we overcome them trying to get in behind."
