Danny Welbeck, starting his first Premier League match for Albion, missed two presentable opportunitites in the first half and Tariq Lamptey also passed up a golden chance in the opening seconds.

The draw extends Brighton's winless run at the Amex to eight matches and leaves them 16th in the Premier League table with six points from eight matches.

"You’ve got to score," said Potter. "That was the only thing missing from our performance. We restricted Burnley to pretty much nothing. We had chances.

"Performance-wise, I’m really happy. We’re always looking to improve. It’s disappointing to only get one point.

"The fact Danny Welbeck gets in there [to have chances] is really positive. It was a really good impact and good performance. He’ll get better and better the longer he’s with us.

"“The team gave everything. We were playing a dangerous opponent but we had a good control of things. We tried our best to score.

"“Possession itself is not that important, it’s what you do with it. You’re not going to get too many chances at this level. We had enough to score."

Burnley climbed off the bottom of the Premier League table but remain winless following a goalless draw.

Welbeck squandered the hosts’ best chance on his full debut but the Clarets almost scored in the first half when full-back Matthew Lowton inadvertently struck the crossbar early on.

The stalemate moved Sean Dyche’s visitors one point above fellow strugglers Sheffield United, who visit Chelsea on Saturday.

"We didn't create as much as you'd like," said Dyche. "It's tough when you're rebuilding. I thought the mentality was right. We looked more like ourselves with our defensive shape and urgency.

"We know we have to create better chances but it's a base to build on. Ben Mee will get fitter and sharper.

"There were moments where we had a good foothold and we defended well when we had to.

"Three of the last four [performances were good]. We're never a million miles away. We need to get on the right side of margins. It needs to happen quickly."
