Graham Potter shows his ruthless side and no Brighton player is safe

Graham Potter is Premier League manager who is always prepared to take a gamble and keep their opponent...and often his own players and supporters guessing

It's always tricky predicting a Graham Potter line-up. Formations, tactics and players are likely to change at short notice. It helps to keep players on their toes and opposition managers scratching their heads.

It can infuriate the fans and it's sure to infuriate his players but who's to say he's wrong?

Brighton recorded their record points tally in the Premier League under Potter last season and despite just five points from the seven matches this campaign, their performances, on the whole, have been decent.

They have lost to Chelsea, Everton, Manchester United and Tottenham and drew with West Brom and Crystal Palace. A 3-0 win at Newcastle remains their solitary triumph.

Potter's men were mightily unlucky to get nothing from the Man U and Spurs matches and the biggest disappointment was the second half home display against newly-promoted and winless West Brom, where a slack 45 minutes cost them two points.

Neal Maupay certainly thought so. The French striker was so riled after the match he took his frustrations too far which ended in an altercation with an unnamed player and he was dropped for the defeat at Spurs.

Potter insists all is forgiven with Maupay and their top scorer will be back in the squad to face Sean Dyche's struggling Burnley on Friday night.

Whether or not Maupay is selected is another matter as Potter - perhaps for the first time since his arrival from Swansea - has a few different options at the sharp end of the pitch.

Aaron Connolly was also, and somewhat surprisingly, left out of the squad for Spurs as Potter started with Leo Trossard and had new arrivals Danny Welbeck and Andi Zeqiri on the bench.

Welbeck was introduced in the second half at Spurs and immediately gave Brighton a focal point for their attack.

Welbeck's inclusion was no real surprise but Zequiri's name on the matchday team sheet ahead of Connolly caught the eye and no doubt came as a jolt for Connolly, who last season scored twice against Spurs on his first Premier League start.

The omission of Maupay, Connolly and goalkeeper Maty Ryan for the Spurs match proves no player is untouchable at Brighton.

Even skipper Lewis Dunk, suspended for the last two matches, has seen Joel Veltman slot in seamlessly at centre back and produce an accomplished display against Harry Kane and co at Spurs. Dunk will serve the last of his three match ban against Burnley.

For the first time since his arrival, Potter has shown his ruthless side and the message has been received loud and clear. It has certainly got the attention of his players, and after the West Brom showing, it was needed.

It could also provide an opportunity Zeqiri who has made a positive impression on the Brighton management team following his £3.5m arrival from Swiss outfit Lausanne-Sport.

The 21-year-old, who joined on a four year contract, has been a regular for the Switzerland Under-21s and has been prolific in his home country.

"He has made a really positive impression," said Potter. "He is a forward player that can play in lots of positions across the line.

"His reactions are really good, he is direct and he is also technically able. His personality has really impressed us.

"It looks like he enjoys his football and he plays with a smile on his face. He plays with incredible enthusiasm and I think he has made a really strong impression."

Potter likes to spring the unexpected and Zeqiri could well be his wildcard for a vital clash against Burnley.
