Brighton and Hove Albion under-23s midfielder Ryan Longman has signed a new two-year contract.

The 19-year-old has been with Albion since the age of 11, and has progressed through the ranks to become part of Simon Rusk’s under-23 squad.

The midfielder made his professional debut for a youthful Brighton line-up last September during a 3–1 home loss against Aston Villa Carabao Cup. Longman came on as a second half substitute, replacing Aaron Connolly on 58 minutes.

Longman said, “I am delighted to commit my future to the club. With the head coach we have it feels that if you prove yourself he will give you the opportunity in the first team.

“Seeing boys you’ve played alongside like Aaron Connolly getting into the first team gives us the belief that there is that pathway.”

Longman says his new contract gives him the opportunity to really focus on his development.

“The club have given me two years to prove myself and try and make it. It gives me the chance to focus on my football and offers me that security,” he added.

“I want to make a name for myself, to show to the manager that I am ready for the first team and regular men’s football.”

He feels that working with Rusk has helped him kick on, especially dealing with the change from under-18s to under-23s football.

“Under-23s football is a big step-up from the under-18s. The speed of the play and everything is a big change, but working under Simon is really good.

“He is a fantastic coach to have. He’s very precise in his work and he helps you improve your technical ability.”
