Brighton remain among a clutch of Premier League clubs eager to sign Liverpool's highly-regarded young striker Brewster who scored 10 goals in 20 appearances during an impressive loan spell at Swansea City last season.

Liverpool yesterday completed a £40m deal for Wolves front-runner Diogo Jota, shortly after announcing the arrival of Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

Jota's arrival could finally pave the way for Brewster's departure with Brighton, Sheffield United and Aston Villa all monitoring the situation extremely closely.

Villa have already added Ollie Watkins to their squad last week, who arrived from Brentford in a club-record deal but Dean Smith remains keen to add a second striker before the end of the transfer window.

Sheffield United were said to in pole-position for the 20-year-old Liverpool man with Chris Wilder confirming talks with the Reds had taken place.

"We have made enquiries about a few strikers and most on loan," Wilder said. "Rhian is one we have talked about and spoken to Liverpool about."

Brighton, who face Newcastle at St James' Park on Sunday, appear light in attacking options highlighted by their 3-1 opening day loss to Chelsea.

Neal Maupay and Leandro Trossard are the main striking options following Glenn Murray's departure to Watford and long-term injuries to Florin Andone and José Izquierdo.

Aaron Connolly, 20, had an encouraging breakthrough season, while Albion head coach Graham Potter's hopes to see further goals from Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who responded witha spectacular strike against Portsmouth in midweek.

With 15 days of the transfer window remaining, Potter, rarely one to get too excited by transfer talk, admits the club are actively looking to improve the squad.

"I'm keen to try and improve the group we have got and that means working with the players we have," he said ahead of the trip to Newcastle. "I have always said that is my main focus.

"The football club in any window has to look for the possibility to improve. We have been through some tough economic challenges recently and I'm not sure we are out of the woods yet.

"We have to be responsible in term of what we are doing and that influences our decision making.

"But at the same time we will always be looking but nothing to report as yet. The biggest focus is improving the players we have because we have a really good bunch here."
