Simon Rusk delight as Teddy Jenks goal helps Brighton sink Manchester City

Simon Rusk was full of praise for his under-23s as they beat Manchester City 2-1 to secure fourth win out of five in Premier League 2.

Skipper Teddy Jenks scored a well-taken second goal of the season to put Rusk’s men in front midway through the first half and they could have added to their lead before City levelled just before half-time through Felix Nmecha.

The visitors were on top for spells in the second half and twice hit the bar, but Albion protected Hugo Keto’s goal well and won it when Romaric Yapi’s teasing cross looped up off Nathanael Ogbeta for an own goal.

“I thought we were good in the first half," said Rusk, who had been heavily linked to taking the manager's job at Cambridge United. "We were a bit disappointed at half-time to come in at 1-1.

“That was a moment of quality from them and a lack of discipline from us. We created plenty of chances and in the second half we had to be a bit more resilient.

“I’m delighted with the attitude and performance, along with what was a really good win.

“Ultimately we managed to see their threat out. We got a bit of fortune with the own goal, but I believe you earn your own luck.”
