Steven Alzate clears up Liverpool goal confusion and reveals how Brighton won at Anfield

The victory was Brighton’s first league win over Liverpool since March 1982 and owed much to the organisation which Graham Potter has drilled into the Seagulls.

Albion created the best chances and the margin of victory could have been greater but it was Alzate who seized the moment with his first Premier League goal in his 28th appearance 11 minutes into the second half.

The first attempt on target found the net as the impressive Dan Burn popped up at the far post to knock a cross back into the danger area and Alzate ran onto it to loop a shot inside the far post, possibly via a deflection from Leandro Trossard.

So was it Alzate’s or Trossard’s goal?

“I’m not sure (if it’s my goal) but I will take it,” said Alzate after the match. It is my first Premier League goal, yeah. So I got to take that one.”

He later tweeted: “Buzzing to have scored my first @premierleague goal! Most importantly we take the three points tonight. Boys were class! I’ll take that one.”

Brighton have now claimed six points from their last two matches against Tottenham and Liverpool. They have 10 points from their last 12, four clean sheets in a row and they are 10 points clear of the bottom three.

“A big result, a very big result,” Alzate added. “The last few games we have been getting good results and I feel like this has been coming.

“The performances have been quite good even at the start of the season but the luck just hasn’t come our way. But a massive win today.

“It is not easy coming here. They are the champions for a reason but we stuck to our game plan and it worked.

“We had to respect our opponents but we wanted to press from the beginning and we didn’t want to give them too much time on the ball.

“But when you go 1-0 up, it’s natural that the team behind is going to come on top and we had to work our socks off to keep a clean sheet.

“We have some quick players in our team and when we got the chance we wanted to catch on the counter attack.

“The Premier League is not easy. Picking up points is big especially against a team like Liverpool so we have to keep going and keep going and get as many points as we can.”

Brighton will have little time to celebrate as they return to Premier League action this Saturday at Burnley, who are 17th, two points behind Albion with a game in hand.
