The Seagulls gave a good account of themselves against Manchester City on Wednesday evening, but still lost 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium, and are currently 17th in the top flight table.

Fulham are one spot and just two points behind them, but still have two games in hand over Albion.

Despite their precarious position, however, James has backed Brighton to get themselves out of trouble thanks to manager Graham Potter.

Speaking on Sky Sports News’ Football Show, the ex-Liverpool and Man City stopper said: “I’ve been in that situation probably too many times than I’d like to mention, but I’m confident with Brighton.

"Graham Potter was part of my cohort doing the Pro Licence, and this guy had talent. I was surprised it took him so long to come over to the UK and become a manager.

"When you look at the side, they’re scoring goals from different areas. Yes, they haven’t got an out-and-out goalscorer, but the fact that they’re getting goals from different players is encouraging.

"Watching the game last night, the thing that amazed me, the conditions were terrible, absolutely terrible – that’s a game you don’t want to play in because it’s so hard – but all of a sudden Brighton were stringing six or seven passes together. They looked more like City than City did in those conditions at times.

“When you’ve got that ability and the style of play that Graham Potter wants to play, you’ll get yourselves out of trouble.

"Yes, they’ve played more games, but there's a long way to go, and I think Brighton will overcome their current winless streak and start producing wins.

"Brighton can get themselves out of trouble.”

The Seagulls haven’t won a top flight game since they beat Aston Villa in late November.

Despite their recent slump, however, Potter has insisted on adhering to his preferred blueprint of attractive and expansive football, and Albion have completed the eighth-highest total of successful passes in the Premier League so far this season.
