West Ham boss David Moyes explains why Lewis Dunk's goal should have been 'chopped off'

David Moyes believes Lewis Dunk's goal for Brighton during the 2-2 draw with West Ham should have been disallowed due to a handball.

Dunk scored Brighton's second on 70 minutes when he smashed home from a quickly taken corner that caught the West Ham defence by surprise.

Dunk' goal was checked by VAR as he appeared to control the ball with his arm in the build-up but it was allowed to stand much to the surprise of Moyes.

Neal Maupay had given Brighton the lead on 44 minutes with his fifth of the season but a strike from Ben Johnson levelled the scores at 1-1.

Dunk's goal looked to have secured all three points for the Seagulls but Tomas Soucek scored a late equaliser as West Ham came from behind to rescue a point.

When asked for his thoughts on Dunk’s goal, West Ham boss David Moyes said: “I think it would be harsh on Lewis Dunk, but it’s a handball in the new rules, isn’t it?

“If it hits your hand and leads to a goal then it is supposed to be chopped off. So it would have been harsh on them but I think that is the rules, unless I have to be told something different.”

Moyes said he was “pleased because of the resilience”, adding: “They kept going when it wasn’t going well. We obviously didn’t perform well especially in the first half. We were really slow and didn’t move well and didn’t pass it well.

“We want to know that we can come back if we’ve gone behind and we did it on a couple of occasions today. So credit the players for that.

“We’ll take the positives. We played better in the second half and showed a bit more determination, but obviously we’ve got to not concede any goals if we can.”

Brighton were the better team but had to settle for a fifth draw in their past eight games and are just two points above the relegation zone in 16th.

West Ham, meanwhile, remain 10th but move on to 22 points.

"First half we weren't good enough," said West Ham goalscorer Ben Johnson. "But we came out and presed them well and worked hard to get back into the game. It's a fair point.

"It was a very slow start from us, sometimes that happens. We couldn't get out of our half, we were all playing individually.

"It's an amazing feeling to score, I've not scored in ages and I thought we would go on to win the game. I've been here since the age of nine so it's a great feeling."
