Roberts made five excellent saves during the County League Division 1 match and, when he was beaten, the underside of the bar saved him from Adam Hunt’s shot in the 0-0 draw.

Lancers went close on three occasions in the first half. Roberts kept out Wayne Joseph’s effort at the near post and Will Berry was also denied by the Chichester stopper after being played through by Shaun Skipper.

George Fenton then flashed an effort just wide, while Lancing again went close in the second half.

Darren Boswell was denied by a superb Roberts double save on 54 minutes and Hunt then saw his fierce shot crash down off the underside of the bar six minutes later.

Young Lancers keeper Dan Neale dealt comfortably with everything he had to do as he kept a second successive clean sheet.

Lancing manager Martin Gander said: “We were generally the better side but just couldn’t score and their keeper pulled off five great saves.

“We did everything right apart from winning the game. It’s not the easiest of places to go and it was a bumpy pitch but we tried to play football.

“I can’t fault the players’ work-rate and we put in a decent performance against a side trying to get out of the bottom three in the division.

“They didn’t really threaten our goal but Dan had a great performance in goal for us and has now kept two successive clean sheets while Joel Harding has been away.”

Lancers are at AFC Uckfield tonight (Thursday). They do not have a match on Saturday, before they travel to Horsham YMCA on Tuesday.
