The 18-year-old, who is part of Brighton & Hove Albion’s development squad, follows her brother, James, who is halfway through a golf scholarship at DePaul University in Chicago – a factor that opened Chloe’s eyes to the joint opportunity of sport and education, which America provides.

The daughter of former Worthing Football Club player Paul Lelliott, Chloe, who plays in midfield, recently travelled to the sunshine states of America after a series of offers.

She settled on Division 2 St Leo because of the location, facilities and standard of football.

Chloe said: “In the UK, it is really hard matching a university education with playing a high level of football because of the way our game is structured outside university.

“In America, they are clearly combined, so that you do both at the same location without either aspect suffering.

“I’ve worked extremely hard to get into this position and feel that St Leo is the best place for me to continue this work and reach my full potential.”

Chloe will study psychology, which is a four-year course, at St Leo and heads out to America in early August for pre-season training, with the first game of the season scheduled for the end of August.

Chloe began her football career with Worthing Town Youth, who she played for in their boys’ team from the age of nine.

She moved on to join Worthing Piranhas from 2009 to 2011 before, after a six-week trial, she was offered a one-year contract with Brighton & Hove Albion’s centre of excellence. She was re-signed on a bi-annual contract renewal, before she was then signed on by Brighton’s women’s development squad in September, 2014. Chloe trained with the first team three times a week and played on Sundays for the development squad.

As well as playing for Brighton, Chloe has also been part of the soccer academy at Worthing College where she studied A Level business, BTEC sports and exercise science and BTEC applied science.
