Dawes was Rebels’ top-scorer with 29 goals last year as they won promotion into the Ryman League Premier Division and also reached the final of the Sussex Senior Cup.

However, Lewes announced this morning that they had signed Dawes and Worthing joint manager Jon Meeney said: “It’s always disappointing to lose a player but there are inside factors to why Lloyd has joined Lewes.

“It’s not without us having things in place and we hope to announce one or two signings this week that will make people sit up and take note.

“Lloyd has moved on for a variety of reasons and we wish him all the best.

“It was never in our plans to allow Lloyd to move on but it was a fantastic move for Lloyd in certain aspects.”

Rebels joint boss Gary Elphick added: “It’s probably a bit of a surprise to our fans that Lloyd is going but everything we do has got to be within our budget.

“I’m gutted to lose Lloyd as he was a great player for us but this frees up more funds and we hope to announce some signings this week.”

A number of Worthing players have agreed deals for next season and Elphick said: “Of last season’s squad, 14 have already committed which is fantastic news and means we can continue to build.”

Meeney added: “The boys return to training on June 30 and we are excited about next season.

“The players we’ve got here are only going to grow and the potential new signings will allow us to be stronger than what we were last season.”

On signing Dawes, Lewes manager Darren Freeman said: “I’ve managed Lloyd when he was a teenager at Whitehawk and know he has goals in him.

“Last season he was pivotal to Worthing’s success and I’m sure he will prove to be just as prolific for us next season. I’d also like to thank each and every contributor to the 12th Man Fund as without that contribution we may not have been able to get Lloyd.”
