Dowell excited as 3G era is set to begin

Dowell took over as the club’s majority shareholder in March and has been delighted to see his plans come to fruition with the 3G pitch now in place at Woodside Road.

He has watched all the work take place and he is now hoping a large crowd will be in attendance when Rebels host League Two Northampton in their first-ever game on the 3G pitch.

Dowell’s investment in the club came at a crucial time, after they had to cut their playing budget completely last season and things were looking bleak. However, Dowell’s arrival and the subsequent work that has taken place has ensured a feel-good factor at the club, with optimism high ahead of the coming season.

Tuesday’s match kicks-off at 7.30pm and Dowell said: “It’s going to be a fantastic day for all involved with the club.

“Since coming in just a few months ago, there have been a few ups and downs but it is all worth it when you see what is happening. When the first game on the new surface gets underway on Tuesday, it will all be worthwhile.

“The players may get to have one training session on the pitch beforehand but that will be it, so it will be either the first or second time they will have played on it. It may take a little while to get used to but we want to put on a good show for the supporters.”

Dowell felt it was important to secure Football League opposition for the inaugural fixture and said: “To get a team from the Football League for the first game on the 3G was the aim. Fortunately, Northampton agreed to come down and it should be a great evening.

“It will also give the lads a great test. We have quite a few young players in the squad, so it’s a chance for them to show what they can do against a league side.

“I’m hoping to see quite a few fans through the doors for the game. It will be a fantastic occasion and the start of something new at this club.

“Hopefully it will be the start of some great progress over the next few years. I’m really looking forward to the game and the season ahead.”

Ticket prices are £8 for adults, £6 concessions (over-65s), £3 for children aged 12 to 16 and under-12s are free.
