Fenelon adds to our firepower - Geary

Striker Fenelon has played for a host of teams in Sussex and was recently playing in the Philippines. He joined the Mavericks this summer - with his mother Princess Goodwin also now the club’s physio - and Geary said: “Cham is a big signing for us. He hasn’t played for a while but is back over here now after playing in the Philippines.

“There were a couple of Ryman clubs after him but he couldn’t commit to playing Ryman football. His mum is here with us as well now and he’s fitted in nicely.

“He needs game time and to get some sharpness back but he’s working hard and if we play to his strengths and get him firing, he’ll be the best striker in the league.

“With Cham, Sam Blundell, Paul Elliott and Alfie Gritt, we’ve got goalscorers and plenty of options.

“On Saturday, we had four or five good chances against AFC Croydon and didn’t score. With these options, if we get two chances in a game, we will probably score.”

United have lost all three of their pre-season friendlies so far, 2-1 to Midhurst, 8-1 against Horsham 8-1 and 2-0 to AFC Croydon.

Geary said: “It’s still early in pre-season and we’ve been playing trialists and I’ve been looking more at performances than the results.

“Obviously the results haven’t been great but we produced a dominant performance against Midhurst and lost to a goal in the last five minutes.

“The Horsham game was a mistake so early in pre-season and is something we’ve learned from. We played a lot of trialists and were 6-0 down at half-time. We were really poor up until half-time but then played well in the second half and it was 1-1 until they scored with the last kick.

“We also played well for an hour against Croydon, who are a good side. We had enough chances to score and they then scored twice in the last 25 minutes after we made a few changes.

“We’ll now look to pick things up a bit and are at home to Sutton Common Rovers on Saturday, before we have a tough test against Worthing on Tuesday.”

A number of Mavericks’ squad from last season have re-signed for the upcoming Southern Combination League Premier Division campaign and United have also signed midfielder George Rudwick and experienced defender Justin Gregory.

United have also linked up with Worthing and will feature younger members from Rebels’ squad, with goalkeeper Rui Buckland playing in the friendly with Croydon.

Geary said: “Worthing aren’t running an under-21 team as they want their young players to play first team football. It’s exciting and is a good move for both clubs as it will keep everyone here on their toes.”
