Jake Holmes’ fired Heath ahead inside a minute but Mavericks bounced back thanks to efforts from Owen Callaghan and substitute Paul Elliott to steal a 2-1 win.

The victory boosted United’s survival hopes as they moved up to 14th in the table with six games to go.

Only Arundel in the bottom six managed to pick up a point in the latest round of fixtures, leaving a five-point cushion between Mavericks and Mullets in the final relegation spot.

United now face a run of four successive games against teams in the bottom eight, starting with a trip to place-above Hassocks on Saturday.

Despite what looks to be a winnable run coming up, Mavericks manager Funnell does not want his team looking too far ahead.

He said: “We showed great spirit and character to fightback on Saturday. When they scored inside a minute I feared the worst. Credit to my team, they turned it around and got the three points.

“We’ve got a run of games against teams around us but we’re just taking it one game at a time.”

Nathan Stroomberg’s attempted clearance inside a minute deflected into Holmes’ path and he slotted Heath ahead. Callaghan struck seven minutes later, before substitute snatched all three points with an effort 12 minutes from time as Mavericks took a 2-1 victory.

WORTHING UNITED: Stroomberg; Fuller, Betancort, Gregory; Hards, Stideford, Robinson, Smith, Rose; Callaghan, Kealy. Subs: Foster (Stideford), Elliott (Rose), Funnell (Kealy).
