Five-star United provide perfect response with win

Worthing United Football Club manager Nigel Geary felt his side's five-star showing against rivals Lancing last night was a perfect response from a tough weekend defeat.

Geary was less then impressed as Mavericks suffered a 5-0 home Southern Combination League Premier Division demolition at the hands of Hassocks.

This time around it was United who were dishing out a hammering as Geary’s side romped to a 5-1 win over Lancers.

Mavericks boss Geary got exactly the response he wanted and said: “This was a perfect response from us. We made changes and I think I was justified to make those.

“We were a little rushed in our final pass in the first half but the key was going 2-1 ahead early in the second.

“We sucked up what they threw at us as they pushed to get level, knowing that the pace we had in forward areas could hurt them. A further three goals in the final 20 minutes then helped us secure a victory, which was exactly what I wanted.”

United made a dream start as Tadley Bromage rose above everyone to head home Mark Goldson’s corner on eight minutes.

Goldson then turned villain 24 minutes later as his trip on Alex Fair saw a spot-kick awarded. Robin Deen sent Fraser Trigwell the wrong way to level things up.

Lancers so nearly took the lead a minute before the break. Tom Caplin and Elliott Finney worked a short corner with the former’s cross headed against the bar by Alex Bygraves.

Mavericks took the lead for a second time four minutes into the second half following a flowing move. Chamal Fenelon spread the play to find Adrian Todd, he then worked a yard and saw his cross flicked home at the front post by Pat Rose.

As Lancers looked for a way back into the game, Mavericks were looking to catch them on the counter.

With 20 minutes to go a third was added as Matt Hards’ perfectly timed through ball sent Goldson away and he slotted past Josh Green.

Hards then got himself on the scoresheet two minutes from time to make sure of all three points. Dave Marsh’s thunderous header sent the Worthing loanee away, with his assured finish going under Green.

Extra gloss was then added as Goldson got his second two minutes into stoppage-time. Fenelon showed great strength to brush off a Bygraves tackle, before setting Goldson free and he made no mistake with his finish.

Lancers assistant coach Martin Gander felt his side were way off the pace and said: “The players looked lethargic and not up for it for some reason. I don’t think it was a 5-1 game but we made some silly errors.”
