Geary joins the club, with assistant Jon Elliott, to replace Foley, who spent just seven months at the club, in a season which resulted in Mavericks being relegated into County League Division 2.

The incoming pair have previously managed successful Sussex Sunday League side AFC Shoreham and United are hoping their knowledge of local football will help pave a successful future at Lyons Way.

Foley, who was appointed by former chairman Gary Downie midway through last season, faced an uphill task at Mavericks, taking over with them rooted to the bottom of the table and facing a player exodus after the previous managers left.

United chairman Steve Taylor admitted it is the start of a new era at the club, but was quick to thank his out-going manager. He said: “John Foley and George Bish (assistant) did a fantastic job in very difficult circumstances. They inherited a small squad and it was even difficult to completely fulfil the fixtures.

“They did everything we asked of them but, with the committee, we looked at the way the club was going and a few applicants were coming forward for the positions.

“We held a few interviews and I am pleased to say we have appointed Nigel Geary and Jon Elliott. They have run a successful Sunday side and Jon obviously is a good centre-half, who was playing county football last season.

“They are able to attract a good calibre of experienced county footballers and they had a great enthusiasm for the club. The decision of going the way of youth fits into the club’s plans and the long-term goal is promotion in the next couple of years.”
