United did not let their heads drop, though, and levelled ten minutes later when Sam Blundell was on hand to fire home following a knock-down from a corner.

The home side then went ahead when another excellent corner resulted in substitute Grant Philpott scoring as he nipped in front of the keeper eight minutes before the break.

There was still time in the opening 45 minutes for Paul Elliott to finish from the edge of the area, after great work by Alfie Gritt, and for Gritt himself to get on the scoresheet as he blasted home after being put through by Blundell to make it 4-1 at the break.

After the interval, Geary’s men added two more through Dean Gilmour and Blundell’s second strike of the game.

Gilmour’s goal was a perfectly-hit free kick which found the bottom right corner, while the influential Blundell raced through to finish as United recorded their most emphatic home win of the season.

United manager Nigel Geary said: “It was a great win and one which means that we can look up the table.

“The club’s record position is 13th in this league, so it would be great to try to challenge that. We’ll try to get as close as possible and use it as a springboard for next season.”

United entertain Arundel on Saturday.

UNITED: Hampson; Taylor, Hasan, Marsh, Callaghan; Edwards, Rose, Gilmour; Blundell, Gritt, Elliott. Subs: Philpott (Hasan 19), Evans (Hampson 25), Joseph (Gritt 71), Hall.
