A tough opening home league saw Lancers go down 5-2 at the hands of Broadbridge Heath.

Tim Martin fired Heath ahead on the half-hour, before Holmes got his first of the evening three minutes after the break.

Jake Mills gave Ash Bailey’s side some hope with his strike a couple of minutes later but Shaun Findlay restored Broadbridge’s two-goal advantage on 53 minutes.

Holmes was causing the home side’s defence all sorts of problems and he bagged his second 20 minutes from time.

The frontman then completed his hat-trick two minutes later as Lancing trailed 5-1.

Youngster Harry Heath did pull one back with eight minutes but it ended 5-2.

Bailey admitted his side’s performance was not good enough and said: “We were really poor and it was a terrible result for us. I said to the boys afterwards I’d be embarrassed by that scoreline and we have to improve on Saturday.”
