LANCING Football Club exited the John O’Hara Cup 2-1 away to St Francis Rangers on Tuesday evening.

The hosts took the lead inside a minute through Aaron Walsh but Lancers responded well to the early set-back and equalised on 35 minutes.

Ryan Waterman raced on to a ball over the top and slotted past the Rangers keeper.

Dominic Shepherd twice went close to giving Lancing the lead in the second half, before Rangers grabbed the win with 15 minutes to go when Ben Palmer’s free kick flew straight in.

Lancing boss Richard Whittington said: “I thought we were the better team but we just didn’t take our chances and gave away two sloppy goals.

“We had several balls scrambled off the line in the first half and their keeper made a couple of good saves. And, we kept on attacking in the second half but we just couldn’t score. I can’t fault the lads as they worked hard and deserved to get something from the game.”

LANCING: Flack; Fenton, Hardman, Davis, Spinks; Waterman, Bant, Conway, Callaghan; Shepherd, Melia. Subs: Romain (Shepherd 76), Rance (Melia 81), Taylor (Hardman 85), Coombe, Kirby.
