Lancers get back to winning ways at Wick

Lancing Football Club returned to winning ways in the Southern Combination League Premier Division on Tuesday.

Alex Fair bagged the only goal a minute from time to ensure Lancers secured a first success in four matches.

Victory for Lancing moved them to within a point of second-placed Eastbourne Town as they look to get their campaign back on track.

Following their three defeats. a tricky trip to an ever-improving Wick side, the game had all the hallmarks for a slip-up.

But boss Ash Bailey heaped praise on his players following a well-earned away win.

He said: “This was a very hard fought win in which we showed excellent determination and character.

“We had a game plan and it paid off in the end.

“We have been on the back of some criticism of late but tonight showed a different side to our game when required.

“Credit to Wick, they gave us a very difficult test and will surprise a few with that level of performance, they’re in a false position and will pick points up between now and the end of the season.”

The match had seemed destined for deadlock but the visitors finally broke through for a 20th league win of the season and close to within six points of leaders Horsham.

Lancers had twice struck the woodwork and also had what looked a clear cut penalty turned down.

In the end, their persistent pressing proved pivotal as Fair eventually fired home from close range to give his a side an important win at Crabtree Park.

Wick had been more than a match for their high-flying visitors for long periods and probably deserved something from the game but Lancers snatched it.
