Lancers snatch victory with the last kick

LANCING Football Club snatched all three points with a last-gasp Mike Williamson winner at home to Eastbourne United on Saturday.

Depleted Lancers were without the services of injured 31-goal strike duo Lewis Finney and Alex Fair and influential centre-back Josh Spinks through illness.

Despite a lightweight bench and a shortage of personnel, Williamson’s winner was just reward for sustained second half pressure that had come after debutant Neil Munday cancelled out Max Taylor’s opener for United.

Lancers had created chances throughout but were also indebted to their goalkeeper, Callum Fidler, who denied the visitors with three excellent second half saves.

Both sides started brightly but United went ahead on 23 minutes when Taylor bundled the ball home.

Lancers’ Jake Mills rattled the bar with a free kick in the first half, before Lancing equalised when debutant substitute Munday bundled home from close range following a spot of penalty area pinball on 74 minutes.

Fidler continued to star as he denied United three times in the closing moments of an increasingly stretched encounter, before Williamson hit the winner with the last kick.
