Lancing reach FA Vase first round

LANCING Football Club progressed into the first round proper of the FA Vase and took home £900 prize money for their 4-2 win at Surrey-based Combined Counties League Premier Division side Banstead Athletic.

Lancers joint manager Jason Rutherford was delighted with the result, and said: “We started well, which is something we haven’t been doing, and closed them down, and the score makes the game look closer than I felt it actually was.

“They’re a decent team and it will go down as a shock as they’re County One standard. It’s great for the club to get the money and we’ll look forward to the next round.”

Lancers made early inroads and went ahead in the ninth minute. Wayne Joseph picked out Shaheen Sadough, who knocked the ball home at the near post.

He then grabbed his, and Lancing’s second on 28 minutes from a free-kick to put them in control.

Banstead pulled a goal back 10 minutes later, but Lee Garnham then volleyed home to restore the two-goal advantage.

Darren Annis lobbed home the fourth goal six minutes after the break, before Sadough was sent-off, although Lancers plan to appeal against the decision.

Banstead then got a goal back in the final minute.

On Sadough’s red card, Rutherford said:” He’s gone up for the ball and as he’s landed he’s caught the player on his thigh. The referee saw it as stamping, but we’re going to appeal as it was never a red card offence. It soured what was otherwise an excellent day for us.”

Lancers will now host Christchurch, who knocked out Worthing United, in the first round proper on October 2.

Lancing remain in cup action on Saturday when they travel to same-division Loxwood in the Sussex RUR Cup first round.

LANCING: Evans; Hibberd, Elliot, Pickford; Joseph, Monaghan, Hayward, Garnham, Turner; Sadough, Annis. Subs: Gibbs (Turner 80), Hurley (Annis 83), Tuppin.
