Late equaliser sees Rebels held by Hawks

AN INJURY-time equaliser meant Worthing Football Club had to settle for a draw at home to local rivals Whitehawk this afternoon (Saturday).

A fine Rebels display and Steve Metcalf goal looked to have been enough to give them all three points, but Sami El-Abd nodded home an equaliser from a corner to rescue his Hawks side a 1-1 draw in the 91st minute.

It did bring an end to Whitehawk’s, who started the day second in the Ryman League Division 1 South table, six-game winning run – but a dominant second-half showing from Rebels deserved more.

Metcalf poked home a Jamie Brotherton cross on 51 minutes to give Rebels the lead and as Worthing pushed they looked the more likely to score again, especially from Manton’s one-on-one chance that was well saved.

Despite the late goal, Rebels boss Chris White hailed his sides’ performance and said: “I thought we were fantastic today. We got it right, hit them on the break and stifled them.

“I feel sorry for the lads as we deserved to win. In tight matches like that it’s that little bit of extra quality you need and if we had used that in the final third we would have taken the game.

“They didn’t create much or play much football really, it all came from us, and we coped with everything they threw at us apart from the one thing at the end.

“I said in the changing room, Tuesday is important now. If we can put in the performances in these type of games then we must do it when we go away to places like Whitstable.”
