Manager who discovered Peter Ward passes away

The manager who discovered Brighton’s greatest ever goalscorer Peter Ward has died at the age of 83.

Ken Gutteridge unearthed Ward during a spell at non league Burton Albion before selling him to the Seagulls for £4,000. Ward, still a firm favourite with Brighton fans, went on to score more than 80 goals for the Seagulls.

Mr Gutteridge followed Ward to the south coast, joining Peter Taylor’s backroom staff at The Goldstone before becoming assistant to Alan Mullery.
