Marquis are spot on to lift Challenege Cup

MARQUIS Rangers Football Club were crowned Sussex Sunday Challenge Cup winners after an injury-time Darren Boswell strike paved the way for their eventual triumph on penalties on Sunday.

Sompting-based Marquis won 6-5 on spot-kicks over Millhouse, from Portslade, with just 10 men after defender Adam Hunt had been sent off in the first half and they found themselves trailing to John Lansdale’s strike.

Boswell fired in from Chris Hibberd’s pass to take the final to extra-time and, although Mark Dixon missed from the spot for Marquis, Ash Bailey and Daryl Livesey both failed for Millhouse.

On the balance of play over 120 minutes, the outcome was justified, although it was a cruel end to an evenly-fought final at Culver Road.

Marquis manager Graham Matthews said: “Everyone was excellent, Alex Duncan, Michael Sims our captain, Lee Garnham and Bozzy in particular, we deserved to win it in extra-time, but penalties is a lottery.”
