Medlock targets play-offs after dream debut

The striker signed for Rebels on Friday evening after he was released earlier in the week by Horsham – where he was top-scorer with 11 goals this season.

Medlock admitted that his debut could not have gone any better and said: “Obviously, joining Worthing was a bit late in the day. It didn’t all come through until Friday evening but it just couldn’t have gone any better on Saturday.

“We had a bit of a slow start and were a goal down but I scored my first goal, the second was a penalty and then I wrapped up the hat-trick. It was great, but scoring goals is what I am here for.

“It’s always difficult coming into a side and I hadn’t trained at all during the week. It can be difficult and you can be a bit wary of how people will take you but it couldn’t have been any better, or gone any better.

“There are only 18 or 19 league games left and if I can score as many as I play, I’ll be happy.

“Worthing were already one of the top scorers in the league, but when I spoke to Kieran (Collins) and Lee (Brace), they felt they needed to freshen things up and if I can score a few goals, it’ll be good for me and the team.”

Rebels sit ninth in Ryman League Division 1 South – four points off the top five – and, on a push for the play-off places, Medlock said: “If you look at the table, teams have a few games in hand but, if we keep winning when we play, then that’s all we can do - it’s certainly something I’m looking to do.”

Medlock was known as a free kick specialist while at Horsham and said: “I’ve scored quite a few this season, which stemmed from last season. I’ve scored five free kicks for Horsham, but we didn’t get any, so I didn’t get the chance to have a go on Saturday.”

Medlock joined Horsham from Eastbourne Borough in the summer and had been a regular in the side for the majority of the season. He was on the bench for three games recently – including the Boxing Day clash at Worthing – but started in his last Horsham game at Sittingbourne on January 5, when he was sent off. That red card means he misses Rebels’ home game with Walton & Hersham on Saturday.
