Metcalf: That was the type of night I came back for

Worthing Football Club captain Steve Metcalf admitted last night's win over Hythe was the type of night he rejoined the club for.

Metcalf, who lives just around the corner from Woodside Road, returned to Rebels in the summer after two seasons with Peacehaven.

Rebels thrashed Hythe 7-0 last night to set up a Ryman League South Division play-off final at home to Faversham on Saturday.

Metcalf was delighted with the performance but also warned that the team have not done anything yet.

He said: “These are the good times at Woodside that we wanted back. The crowds have been really pleasing this year and the support tonight was incredible.

“With a performance like that, hopefully we get a few more in on Saturday.

“We haven’t done anything at the moment, though. We’ve got to go again and put in a professional performance on Saturday.

“It’s a final, a one-off game.

“Anything can happen, the boys know that but they’re all quite grounded and we’ll all work hard and put everything in.”

On the game itself, Metcalf said: “Everyone worked really hard as a team and it was a top performance by everyone.

“We were always thinking it would be a tight game but once we got one or two goals ahead, it opened up a little bit and our attacking players just frightened the life out of them.

“We stood strong at the back and took our chances. Jordan (Maguire-Drew) has just been different class since he’s come in. His first goal and his free kick were unbelievable.”
