Keeper Rikki Banks returned to the club last week and will challenge Jack Fagan, who played 54 of Rebels’ 56 matches last season, for the number one spot.

Elphick insists that their performances will determine who starts in goal, after Rebels released a statement last week following concern from some fans about Fagan’s development, after Banks signed.

Elphick said: “I want the fans to stay on side. I do things for a reason and that’s to get the best results for Worthing Football Club.

“Jack Fagan is away for a part of pre-season and he also misses most of August, so I didn’t want to loan in a keeper that’s unknown to the back four.

“Rikki will be loved by the fans and I just want competition for places all over the pitch and I think that just bodes well for the future.

“There’s not a number one, they’ve got to push each other throughout the season. Their performances will be the reason why they’re in and around the team.”

Elphick is pleased with the squad he has assembled so far and signed Ryan Morey on Tuesday, after the winger impressed on trial.
