WORTHING Football Club took a share of the spoils in an entertaining Bank Holiday derby clash at home to Burgess Hill this afternoon.
A first-half strike by Lloyd Dawes on his home debut was cancelled out by Hillians’ Max Miller right at the end of the opening 45 minutes which Rebels had controlled.
A series of good stops from Jack Fagan and poor finishing, however, in the second half ensured the hosts didn’t leave Woodside Road with all three points.
Rebels took the lead they had been threatening on 27 minutes as Jamie Crellin headed a deep cross back into the danger area after a John Lansdale long throw and Lloyd Dawes hit a sweet volley past Alan Mansfield.
It was all Worthing up until the closing stages of the first half - with Dawes and Chris O’Flaherty providing the attacking flair - but Burgess Hill exerted some pressure on the host in final moments and got level with just two minutes left to play.
Miller broke forwards between the Worthing back four, latched onto a long ball and fired past Jack Fagan via the underside of the bar.
It was fairly subdued after the break with Fagan showing smart hands on a number of occasions, collecting a cross at the feet of Sam Fisk, again from a Toby Pointing header and at the feet of Greg Luer twice, moments after the Burgess Hill man came off the bench.
On 85 minutes, Luer scuppered the chance to pinch all three points, missing an open goal as he drilled wide after Fagan made a good save from Richard Greenfield but the ball broke across the goalmouth.
At the other end, on 90 minutes Rebels had the chance to take all three points themselves as Mansfield saved a cracking volley from Dawes and Crellin fired the follow-up into the side netting.
