Rebels crash at home to Peacehaven

WORTHING Football Club suffered a 4-0 defeat at home to Peacehaven & Telscombe in the Ryman League South Division on Tuesday (August 13).

The visitors, who won County League Division 1 last season, led 2-0 at half-time before adding a third just before the hour and netted a fourth in injury-time.

The game started in an end-to-end fashion as Peacehaven had two efforts ruled out for offside, while Rebels’ best openings fell to lively left-winger Chris O’Flaherty.

His free kick on six minutes dipped a fraction too late and landed on the roof of the net, before he fired just wide from 15 yards following a mazy run three minutes later.

Worthing’s Will Berry then had a header cleared off the line on 14 minutes, before O’Flaherty sent a lovely ball over the top of the Peacehaven defence but Freddie Barker was just unable to get the ball under control to have a clear run at goal.

The visitors went ahead on 30 minutes when John Lansdale’s clearance hit Charlie Walker and Lansdale then clumsily bundled over the Peacehaven striker, with referee Casimir Nzenga pointing to the penalty spot. Walker sent Rebels keeper Simon Lehkyj the wrong way to give Peacehaven the lead.

Rebels had a penalty shout of their own waved away five minutes later when Barker went down and Peacehaven doubled their advantage on 39 minutes when Tom Burton headed home an inswinging Joe Dryer free kick from the right.

Worthing appealed that Jamie Brotherton had handled the ball before it had crossed the line, although it looked as though the ball had already gone over and the officials awarded the goal after a brief discussion.

Barker had another penalty appeal turned down just before the break when he went down under a Dryer challenge and Rebels went into half-time 2-0 down.

The visitors went 3-0 ahead 13 minutes into the second half when ex Rebel Tom Lawley nodded home from close range after Lehkyj parried Burton’s shot on the turn.

Peacehaven added a fourth in injury-time when Trevor McCreadie fired home after his first shot was cleared off the line.
