WORTHING Football Club eventually got their rewards on Tuesday night when a late strike rescued a 1-1 draw at Fleet – but another draw left boss Chris White admitting a play-off push looks unlikely.
Mike Huckett finished well in the 87th-minute to cancel out Lee Riddell’s first-half header, but yet more dropped points leaves Rebels floundering just below mid-table in 12th, 11 points off the Ryman League Division 1 South play-off places.
On their chance off finishing in the top five, White said: “In all honesty, I think we have had too many draws, but all the time it is mathematically possible, we’ll keep going for it.
“All we can do is take care of ourselves and, although it is unlikely, we can hope other results go our way.”
It was Rebels’ second trip to Fleet in little over a month. Their last league clash on February 1 was abandoned owing to fog after 65 minutes when Rebels were leading 2-1.
But goals were somewhat at a premium this time round, and in a fairly uneventful first half, Riddle had nodded the home side ahead from a corner, to give them the lead at the break.
Worthing pushed on in the second half and dominated possession, although did fail to produce many clear-cut chances.
George Gaskin and Huckett both went close to levelling, while Callum Saunders was hauled down in the box for what White described as “a nailed on penalty”.
But Rebels got their rewards late on as Huckett played a one-two with Billy Franks, and dinked it over the Fleet goalkeeper.
In the closing stages, they could have nicked all three as Terry Dodd’s ball across goal hit the post and Shaun Charles grazed the crossbar.
White added: “In the second half, we bombarded them and were a little unfortunate not to take all three points.
“In the first half, we were going up the hill and conceded a soft goal from a header which put us one down at the break.
“But then we got so far on top, as long as we kept going I thought we would get something and we did.”
Rebels were without both Tom Manton and Steve Metcalf to injury, while Ryan Timms and Ryan Peake did not travel owing to illness.
