WORTHING Football Club have added Ryan Morey to their squad after the young winger impressed on trial.
Morey has featured in all three of Rebels’ pre-season friendlies, after playing for Bognor Regis and Pagham last season.
Worthing joint boss Gary Elphick is pleased to have him on board for the upcoming Ryman League South Division campaign and said: “He’s really impressed me and we didn’t want to run the risk of him going elsewhere, so have signed him on. We’ll make a decision on our other trialists, Matt Axell and Sibu Muwanga, after Saturday.”
Rebels drew 2-2 at home to Conference South side Eastbourne Borough on Saturday, before they beat local rivals Worthing United 3-1 to lift the Malcolm Gamlen Trophy on Tuesday.
Ben Pope and Brannon O’Neill were on target against Borough, before Omar Bugiel, Pope and Harry Smith netted against Mavericks.
Pope, who had trials with Stoke, Norwich and Cambridge last season, has now netted in all three friendlies and Elphick said: “Ben couldn’t have wished for a better start to pre-season – he’s scoring goals, looking sharp and his movement is fantastic. He’s also proved he can cope with the physicality of this league and we’ll make sure he keeps progressing here and, hopefully, he’ll get signed by a league club.”
On pre-season so far, Elphick said: “It’s been pleasing, although I wasn’t overly happy at times with the performance in the second half against Worthing United.
“It got a little bit scrappy but that is one of the issues when players start to play 60 or 70 minutes and fatigue sets in.”
Rebels have now played three matches on the new 3G surface at Woodside Road and Elphick said: “The players are liking the pitch and enjoying it. They can play football on it, which is the best thing and it’s going to be a massive asset to us.”
Rebels entertain Horsham and Burgess Hill in a three-team tournament on Saturday, with the first 70-minute game at midday. Worthing then host Lewes on Tuesday (7.30pm).
