Tadley Bromage was shown a second yellow card seven minutes from time but Wick failed to find a way through.

Second-bottom Wick are now six points adrift of two-places-above Peacehaven & Telscombe and safety with nine games to go.

Having failed to take a single point from the previous three games against Mavericks, Peacehaven and Crawley Down Gatwick, Wick boss Baldwin knows the size of the task facing his side in the remaining matches.

He said: “We had a real chance to build some momentum in the past three games. We haven’t managed to take a single point and it’s going to be really tricky for us now.

“I’d say we are one of the unluckiest teams in this league. Worthing United had one shot on Saturday, then Rob scored the own-goal.

“Even their manager said at the end they didn’t deserve to win.

“I’ve got a young squad, plus I’m still a young manager so this is a real steep learning curve. This isn’t a nice place to be but we’ll keep fighting till the end and hopefully get out of trouble.”

Josh Irish saw a couple of first half opportunities saved by Matthew Evans in Mavericks’ goal.

The decisive moment then came ten minutes from the end as Brown diverted into his own net.

Bromage received a second yellow card three minutes later as United were forced to see out the final minutes with ten-men.

Wick pushed for a leveller but failed to find a way through with Mavericks holding on for all three points.

Wick welcome leaders Shoreham to Crabtree Park on Saturday as they look to end a run of six consecutive SCFL Premier Division defeats.
