The SCFL’s plea to extend the season by a week was rejected by The FA last month. However, SCFL chairman Steve Nealgrove sent another letter to The FA last week, asking to extend the season until May 7.

The season is due to finish on Saturday, April 26, but the SCFL have applied to extend the season further – and that was before a number of games were called off on Saturday and again on Tuesday.

Nealgrove said: “I sent a letter to The FA last week, asking for an extension until May 7.

“As of last week, the league had completed just 58.42 per cent of fixtures and it must still be around a similar percentage now, as we lost games on Saturday and again on Tuesday.

“Some sides are going to end up playing three times a week. It’s not ideal, we accept that but the finishing date is laid down by The FA, not the SCFL.

“As part of the National League System, we have to accept that, as it is what we have signed up to.

“Even if we only get a week’s extension, we’ll have the option for teams to play three games in that week.”

Plans to move the John O’Hara Cup from its usual Good Friday slot to the May Bank Holiday Monday had already been announced.

The Division 3 Cup is also now to be played as a knock-out competition, rather than over two legs.
