Seagulls’ weekend odds – Sheffield Wednesday

BRIGHTON have made a solid rather that spectacular start to their Championship campaign but manager Gus Poyet will be pleased to find his charges sitting in fourth position as they prepare to welcome Sheffield Wednesday to the AMEX Stadium on Friday evening.

With the Owls also in the play-off positions, in sixth, the winners will actually top the Championship table come Friday night and the confident recommendation is that team will be the Seagulls.

Albion go into the game in a rich vein having boosted their goal difference in the last two outings with a comfortable 5-1 defeat of Barnsley, followed by an eye catching 3-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

Craig Mackail-Smith (11-2 to grab Friday’s opener) bagged two in Lancashire to take him quickly onto four for the season and fans will be delighted the club were able to fend off interest from a number of Premier League clubs ahead of the recent transfer window.

The Scottish international has seen his Championship golden boot odds slashed to 16-1 after touching 40-1 recently and is a warm favourite at 1-2 to lift the Brighton top scorer award at BetVictor.

Ashley Barnes (6s to score first against the Owls) at 3-1 and Will Buckley at 10-1 are seen as his most likely challengers, with Vicente at 20-1 attracting those looking for a lively outsider.

Sheffield Wednesday will be contemplating back-to-back promotions after adjusting to life quickly back in the Championship. They have found scoring no problem but defensively they don’t look convincing, having conceded eight goals already and Albion will be confident of exploiting that perceived weakness.

Albion are 21-20 to gain maximum points, with the draw 13-5 and Wednesday 11-4 and odds against has to look value for the Seagulls.

Brighton are 14-1 with Wednesday 28-1 and Albion are 5-1 to secure promotion to the Premier League, with the Owls 8-1.

The Seagulls look value at 5-2 to finish in the top six and that price will contract sharply if they win on Friday evening and, with a visit to Vicarage Road and Watford on the midweek horizon, Brighton could be very well positioned this time next week in the Championship table.

Worthing are finding life difficult this term in Ryman League Division One South and a 4-3 home reverse on Tuesday evening against Walton Casuals saw the Rebels drop to 20th after winning only one of their opening five fixtures. Three second-half goals show there is nothing wrong with the spirit in the side but manager Chris White has his work cut out to transform the campaign.
