More than 400 children representing nine areas from across Sussex competed against each other last Wednesday at football, hockey, netball and rugby sevens to compete for regional and individual honours.

Superb performances saw the southern area of schools top the competition – which is organised under the Sainsbury’s 2013 School Games banner with Active Sussex and part of the Olympic and Paralympic legacy – with 37 points, winning three medals from the five events.

The day began with a spectacular opening ceremony before Olympic bronze medal winner Alex Danson helped open the event. The hockey star was guest of honour and one of a number of speakers, including Active Sussex chief executive Sadie Mason.

Oak Grove College and Our Lady of Sion School won gold medals in the football and netball respectively, and St Andrew’s Primary School, in Steyning, won bronze in the hockey.

St Andrew’s Boys School, River Beach Primary School and Arundel Church of England School also added some vital points to the leader board which took the southern area six points clear at the top.

St Andrew’s Boys narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the rugby as they finished in fourth place.
