Southwick 1882 FC ready for big kick-off - and looking to future with confidence

After a lot of work by many people, it’s the big kick-off on Saturday. At 2pm on the top pitch at Southwick Rec, all are welcome to the first match played by the new Southwick 1882 FC.

The new club is a Community Interest Company formed by the players, coaches and supporters of the old Southwick FC to keep alive 138 years of football in Southwick following the closure of the ground Old Barn Way.

The #BringHomeTheWickers campaign aims to get the club back to its rightful home in Old Barn Way and they have already received lots of support from the community.

The team have dropped two divisions to the Mid Sussex League’s Championship division.

A vibrant youth section has been formed and will also be competing in local leagues.

Southwick 1882 FC is inheriting the mantle and huge history of the old club, who were county league winners many times, Isthmian League members in the 80s and 90s and reached the FA Cup First Round in 1974.

A spokesman said: “We look to the future with confidence.

“We have support not just from the local community but national figures in football and football journalism.

“And, as a community club, we want you to join us.

“We are asking for people to become members and, where possible, offer practical and financial support, in the first instance to help with the pitch hire, officials’ fees and other costs associated with starting a brand new club - and in the longer term, if as we hope our bid is successful, to help us with the wider expense connected with moving back to Old Barn Way and ensuring a bright future for football in Southwick.

People attending pSaturday’s game should use the COVID app or give their details to a steward. This is to keep people safe and help the club act responsibility.
